Conference: September 12, 2025, United Nations University, Tokyo

Hackathon: September 13, 14 and 15, 2025, Dragon Gate, Shibuya, Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan, September 1, 2025.

The global Ethereum community will gather in Tokyo this September for ETHTokyo 2025, a unique mix of conference and hackathon designed to explore how Ethereum can empower individuals, reshape society, and build a sustainable future.

This year’s theme, “Emancipatory Tech for the Future of Humanity,” calls on developers, researchers, and builders to reimagine technology’s role for humanity.

WHAT IS ETHTOKYO?

ETHTokyo is a community of Tokyo-based developers and professionals, driven by a shared sense of cypherpunk ethos and optimism for the future, dedicated to advance the development and adoption of Ethereum.

The event brings together global experts and local teams to discuss the future of Ethereum, experiment with new ideas, and develop practical implementations.

From cryptography and privacy to finance, AI, and rollups, ETHTokyo intends to be a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and innovation. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or just curious, you’ll find friends and inspiration here. Our goal is simple: to connect diverse minds and foster the creation of amazing new innovations for the future.

ONE EVENT WITH A CONFERENCE, A HACKATHON AND WORKSHOPS

On September 12, 2025, ETHTokyo will host its annual conference at the United Nations University in Tokyo, bringing together thought leaders, developers, and innovators from around the globe.

Highlights include Sora Suegami on the roadmap to practical iO, Ventali on cryptography for AI safety, Patrick McCorry and Leona Hioki on Curing the Rollup Ecosystem.

Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin, and the Ethereum Foundation Team will also be present.

From September 13 to 15, 2025, the spotlight will shift to Dragon Gate in Shibuya for ETHTokyo’s hackathon. Participants will compete across 3 tracks each with a $3,000 prize :

– Cypherpunks Anonymous (Privacy & Security)
– Counterculture Capital (Financial Innovation)
– Actually Intelligent (AI & Society)

More than just a competition, the hackathon is a collaborative space where talents can envision new ways and better approaches to do things through reshaping and redefining the constraints of our own constructed reality.

Lastly, ETHTokyo will also host workshops with its sponsors, giving participants the chance to learn directly from experts. These sessions are for hackers, even beginners, and will show how sponsor tools and products can be applied to real hackathon projects. By making resources more accessible, the workshops ensure that anyone with an idea has the opportunity to build something that makes a difference for humanity.

BGIN LAYER 2 MEETUP

As a side event, the Blockchain Governance Initiative Network (BGIN) Layer 2 Meetup will take place on September 15, 2025, from 2 pm to 4 pm at Shibuya Parco DG Bldg.

Open to both hackathon participants and the public, the session will focus on two critical protocols: Privacy Pool and Accountable Wallet. The goal is to gather feedback and comments on standardization documents.

WHY ETHTOKYO MATTERS

At ETHTokyo, discussions extend beyond technology. The program explores how Ethereum can have an impact with society and culture. We will also discuss what new possibilities may emerge through its convergence with AI, finance, and privacy-preserving computation.

This year’s event also offers a rare opportunity to directly engage with Ethereum leadership and explore how blockchain can drive corporate and societal transformation.
