What Is Claude & Claude 3.5?

  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperforms GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5 Pro in benchmarks, making it smarter and faster than previous models.
  • The "Artifacts" feature allows users to input prompts and see real-time code effects, enhancing coding with AI assistance.
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet excels in handling images and interpreting data, making it valuable for industries like retail and logistics.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet by Anthropic is a powerful chatbot that surpasses GPT-4 in various tests, featuring new “Artifacts” for enhanced coding collaboration. Try out Claude 3.5 Sonnet for improved AI interaction.

Claude was launched in March 2023 and developed by Anthropic. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI engineers, the same company that developed ChatGPT, making Claude a direct competitor to ChatGPT.

Claude is a set of large language models (LLM) developed by Anthropic. This chatbot can process text, voice messages, and documents, and is claimed to generate faster contextual responses compared to similar chatbots. Claude includes three versions: Claude Opus, the most powerful model; Claude Sonnet, a powerful and competitively priced model; and Claude Haiku, designed for enterprises and suitable for use cases requiring instant responses.

Claude has two main features:

  1. Constitutional AI: Anthropic combines guidelines such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Apple’s data privacy rules to focus on safe training. Using their proprietary “Constitutional AI” training technique, Claude learns to generate safe, harmless, and ethical responses through extensive communication data training, reducing the need for human intervention in AI.

  1. Handling a Large Volume of Words: Claude can read up to 75,000 words at a time, approximately the length of a book. Its memory capabilities have also greatly improved, allowing it to maintain conversations for over a day without forgetting previous topics.

The Claude series models from the startup Anthropic recently welcomed a new member – Claude 3.5 Sonnet, the first version of the upcoming Claude 3.5. Claude 3.5 Sonnet has outperformed competitors like GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5 Pro in multiple benchmark tests. It is even smarter and faster than Anthropic’s flagship model, Claude 3 Opus, while costing only one-fifth as much.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet introduces a collaboration tool designed for internal enterprise teams called “Artifacts.” This is a workspace where users can edit and add to generated content. For example, if Claude is asked to write code, the code appears in the Artifacts window, allowing users to see real-time effects.

More importantly, Claude 3.5 Sonnet can independently write and execute code with complex inference and advanced debugging capabilities, given appropriate guidance and tools. Many developers have tested its coding abilities, finding it faster and easier to create small games and web pages.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is a multimodal model that excels in handling images, especially in interpreting charts and graphics, helping users gain insights from data more quickly and deeply. When image quality is poor, Claude 3.5 Sonnet can accurately transcribe text from scanned documents to extract more information. This has valuable applications in industries such as retail, logistics, and financial services.

Anthropic has also provided charts comparing the performance of Claude 3.5 Sonnet, demonstrating its superiority in areas such as reasoning ability, knowledge comprehension, code editing, and mathematical skills over their own Claude 3 Opus. Additionally, Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4o in seven metrics. It also surpasses Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro and Meta’s llama-400b in various language model benchmarks.

According to Anthropic’s tests, Claude 3.5 Sonnet excels in four key areas compared to GPT-4o: mathematical recognition, scientific chart interpretation, chart understanding, and document comprehension.

In this update, Anthropic has introduced the “Artifacts” feature. Users can input additional prompts through a right-side window while the chatbot automatically generates text, code, and other content. This allows for deeper interaction with the chatbot to complete various tasks. If the generated code can be previewed on a webpage, such as SVG graphics or HTML, users can directly preview these in the right-side window. This feature enhances the user experience when using AI for coding.

The Artifacts feature needs to be enabled manually. Simply click on the avatar at the top right, select “Feature Preview,” and set Artifacts to “On” to use it.

Anthropic hopes that this feature will expand to support team collaboration in the future, allowing entire teams to share various files within the workspace and have AI serve as a powerful teammate.

If you use this feature effectively, you may be able to quickly create simple web games, just like in its introduction video.
