Apple App Store Chief to Attend OpenAI Board Meetings as Observer.

Apple has chosen App Store chief and former marketing head Phil Schiller to represent the company on OpenAI’s nonprofit board, according to a report from Bloomberg. Schiller will reportedly get an observer role, meaning he can attend board meetings but can’t vote or act as a director. This move aligns with Apple’s strategy to integrate AI technologies like ChatGPT into its operating systems.

Schiller’s appointment to the board will provide him with insights into the inner workings of OpenAI, which could be invaluable as Apple plans to incorporate ChatGPT into iOS and macOS later this year. This integration aims to enhance Siri’s capabilities, enabling it to handle more advanced queries by leveraging ChatGPT, provided users grant the necessary permissions.

According to Bloomberg, while no financial transactions are involved in the current partnership, Apple is expected to receive a percentage of ChatGPT subscriptions made through its platforms in the future. This potential revenue stream underscores the strategic importance of Schiller’s new role.

Last year, Microsoft also joined the board that oversees OpenAI in a similar non-voting observer capacity. The presence of both Apple and Microsoft on OpenAI’s board could complicate discussions, as noted by Bloomberg. It is relatively rare for Apple executives to take board seats at partner companies, highlighting the significance of this appointment.

The addition of Schiller to OpenAI’s board is expected to foster deeper collaboration between the two tech giants, potentially driving innovation in AI and enhancing user experiences on Apple devices. This move also signals Apple’s commitment to staying at the forefront of AI advancements by closely monitoring and contributing to the development of OpenAI’s technologies.
